Artificial tears can provide welcome relief when your eyes feel dry, gritty, or irritated, but frequent drops may not address what is causing chronic dry eye. For many patients in New Braunfels, problems with the eyelid oil glands or inflammation around the eyes can contribute to an unstable tear film.
At Refined Eye Care & Eyewear Gallery, we offer advanced dry eye treatments including Forma-I radiofrequency and Lumecca-I intense pulsed light therapy. These technologies allow us to target specific contributors to dry eye rather than relying only on temporary lubrication.
Healthy tears contain several components, including an oily layer produced by the meibomian glands along the eyelids. This oil helps keep tears from evaporating too quickly.
When the meibomian glands become blocked or do not release healthy oils effectively, a condition known as meibomian gland dysfunction, tears can evaporate faster. Artificial tears may temporarily lubricate the eyes, but they do not necessarily correct blocked glands or underlying inflammation.
Signs that a more detailed dry eye evaluation may be helpful include:
Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations
Red or irritated eyes
Excessive watering despite feeling dry
Fluctuating or blurry vision
Contact lenses becoming uncomfortable earlier in the day
Because dry eye can have several causes, treatment should be based on examination findings rather than symptoms alone.
At our New Braunfels practice, Forma-I uses controlled radiofrequency energy to gently warm the tissues around the eyelids. This heat can help soften thickened oils within the meibomian glands, making them easier to express.
We may follow radiofrequency treatment with meibomian gland expression to help clear obstructed glands and encourage healthier oil flow.
The goal is to improve an important part of the tear film so tears remain on the eye surface more effectively. Results vary, and patients with chronic dry eye may still need ongoing home care or additional treatments.
Lumecca-I uses intense pulsed light, or IPL, around the eye area. IPL may be helpful when inflammation, ocular rosacea, abnormal superficial blood vessels, or meibomian gland dysfunction are contributing to dry eye symptoms.
Controlled pulses of light target blood vessels associated with inflammation while also producing heat that may help improve meibomian gland expression.
For selected New Braunfels patients, IPL can therefore address inflammatory and gland-related factors that ordinary lubricating drops cannot directly treat.
There is no universal dry eye treatment. Some patients primarily have meibomian gland blockage, while others have significant inflammation, tear-production problems, eyelid conditions, allergies, or several contributing factors at once.
A personalized dry eye evaluation helps determine whether Forma-I radiofrequency, Lumecca-I IPL, heat therapy, prescription treatment, eyelid care, artificial tears, or a combination of approaches makes sense.
Calling these treatments "root-cause" therapies does not mean every case of dry eye has the same root cause or can be permanently cured. Instead, advanced treatments allow us to address specific underlying contributors identified during your examination.
If you are reaching for eye drops several times each day but still experiencing burning, redness, watering, or fluctuating vision, it may be time to look more closely at your tear film and meibomian glands.
Chronic dry eye often requires ongoing management, but identifying the factors driving your symptoms can lead to a more targeted treatment plan.
